Cochin is

Cochin is made up of the mainland of Ernakulam, Willingdon Island, Mattancherry, Fort Cochin, Vypeen Island and Bolghatty Island.

Ernakulam is the modern commercial part of the city. This is where the vast majority of homes, workplaces and shopping areas are located. Willingdon Island is home to the Cochin Port. Fort Cochin, where Koder House is located is famous for its Chinese fishing nets and its meld of Dutch, Portuguese and English influences. Mattanchery is famous for its ‘Jew Town’ and its Jewish Synagogue. This is the historic part of Cochin, made famous by centuries of spice trade.

Places to see
	MATTANCHERRY PALACE: Also known as the Dutch Palace, it was built by the Portuguese and presented to the Raja of Kochi in 1555 AD. It’s name comes from the extensions and repairs carried out by the Dutch in 1663. It was always owned by generations of Kochi Maharajas. Murals from the Ramayana adorn the walls. Also check out the displays of royal costumes and palanquins. Visiting hours: 1000 hrs to 17.00 hrs. Closed on Fridays and national holidays.

	JEWISH SYNAGOGUE: Built in 1568 AD, the Synagogue is in the heart of Jew Town. Take a look at the Great Scrolls of the Old Testament, preserved in their metal containers. The copper plates in which the grants of privilege made by the Cochin rulers were recorded. The entire flooring is done in tiles imported from China in the 17th century. Hand-painted, no two carry precisely the same design. Visiting Hours: 1000 hrs to 1200 hrs and 1500 hrs to 1700 hrs. Closed on Sundays and Jewish Holidays.

	St. FRANCIS CHURCH: This protestant church was built by the Portuguese in 1510 AD and is believed to be the oldest church built by the Europeans in India. Vasco da Gama was buried here and his remains were only taken to Portugal 14 years later.

	SANTA CRUZ BASILICA: This Roman Catholic Church in Fort Cochin is also one of the oldest in the country. It has beautiful paintings within.

	CHINESE FISHING NETS: The Chinese Fishing nets use a special mechanism to catch fish. Believed to have been brought by from China by traders of Kubalai Khan's Court, they are still functional today and are used at high tide.

	BOLGHATTY PALACE: Bolghatty Palace is situated in Boghatty Island, a narrow palm fringed Island easily accessible from the mainland. The Palace was built by the Dutch in 1744. Later, it became the seat of the British Resident and today this has been converted into a hotel run by KTDC.

	HILL PALACE MUSEUM: The Hill Palace Museum is situated 12 km away from Ernakulam. Historically one of the royal residences of the Cochin Royal Family, today, it exhibits sculptures, rare coins, old weapons and ancient manuscripts. There is also a icollection from Cochin Royal Family which is of historic and social interest. Horse riding facility is also available. Visiting Hours: 9.00 hrs to 12.30 hrs. and 14.00 hrs to 16.30 hrs. Closed on Monday and National holidays. Admission: Rs. 10/- per adult & Rs. 5/- per Child. Camera Rs. 20/- Video Camera Rs. 1000/-.

	MUSEUM OF KERALA HISTORY: Situated at Edappally, the museum is known for its oen hour light and sound shows. These focus on the makers of Kerala history.
